Brow ridge and brow position

One of these is bone that stopped changing when you were about twenty. The other is hair, and it changes in twenty minutes. People asking about the first almost always want the second.

THE SHORT ANSWER

The brow ridge is the bone above your eye socket and it is fixed. Where your eyebrow hair sits, how thick it is and where it arches are not fixed at all, and they change how your face reads more than almost anything else available to you in an afternoon.

The brow area gets discussed as one thing and it is really three: the bone, the soft tissue over it, and the hair on top. They behave completely differently, and almost all the frustration around this feature comes from applying an answer about one of them to a different one.

The bone

The supraorbital ridge is the shelf of bone running across the top of both eye sockets. How far it projects forward is one of the more strongly dimorphic features on the human face, meaning it is one of the differences that tends to separate faces read as masculine from faces read as feminine. It is set by development and finishes in the late teens or early twenties.

Press just above your eyebrow and slide your finger up. The point where the bone stops jutting and the forehead starts sloping back is the top of the ridge. That is the whole measurement, and there is nothing to be done about it.

Two things get sold against this fact and neither works. Devices claiming to build the ridge do nothing, because bone does not respond to that kind of load in adults. Techniques claiming to bring it forward through posture or tongue position also do nothing to the ridge, whatever else they may or may not affect. If your ridge is flat, it is flat, and the useful move is to stop spending on it.

What does change how visible it is: body fat. A thinner face has less soft tissue over the bone, so an existing ridge reads more strongly. Nothing was built. Something was uncovered, exactly as with cheekbones.

The position

Where the brow sits relative to the eye is partly bone and partly soft tissue, and it descends slowly with age. A lower brow sitting close to the lash line produces hooding, where upper eyelid skin rests over the lid. This is normal, it is extremely common, and it is not a fault. It mainly changes how much eyelid is visible and therefore how eye makeup reads.

Hooding is also the reason two people can have identically shaped eyes and get completely different reads. The eye underneath is unchanged. What differs is how much of it you can see.

The hair, which is the part worth your attention

This is the highest return change on the entire upper face, because it is free, fast and completely reversible.

ChangeWhat it does
ThicknessA fuller brow reads younger and more defined. Over plucked brows age a face noticeably, and regrowth takes months rather than weeks, so this is the one to be conservative with.
Arch positionWhere the peak sits changes the whole expression of a resting face. A peak further out reads open and lifted, a peak nearer the centre reads more intense.
Tail lengthA tail that stops short makes the eye look rounder and the face wider. Extending it lengthens the apparent eye, which interacts directly with canthal tilt.
The gap between themFalls inside the facial fifths, where the ideal spacing is roughly one eye width apart. Closing or opening this gap changes how wide the whole upper face reads.

The reason this matters out of proportion to its size is that people read expression from the brow before they read anything else. A resting brow that sits low and flat is read as annoyed by strangers who have never spoken to you, and that read has nothing to do with your mood.

How Forma reports it

Brow feeds the eye area score rather than getting its own headline number, because the eye and the brow are read together and separating them produces a measurement nobody experiences. The scan distinguishes between the bone and the hair, and that distinction decides the plan: brow shape and thickness produce a real, fast task, while a flat ridge produces none, because the honest answer there is that it is bone.
